Step by Step Owl Painting
I have had a few people ask me about my process lately and they were wondering how I came to have the appearance of such fine detail. I thought I would repost this series of photos that show step by step how this painting came from start to finish. I always work with a delicate drawing and thin paint. Often the pencil lines still show through and add to the end result. Hope you enjoy it.

Beautiful Bee hive
This painting started because I was gifted with this beautiful bee hive. My awesome husband brought it to me. It has hung around my studio for several years now and I have been waiting for the right idea to pop up so that I could include it in a painting. The hive is a beautiful globe of grey paper hanging gracefully from a branch. This bear had just the right look of curiosity for this painting.
It is acrylic on board and is available.

Honeysuckle Perch
The HoneySuckle is flowering in the woods...and it is beautiful. My husband picked a bouquet of it and tucked it into the front of his saddle bringing it home to the studio for me. Here is the results.

What I Paint with.
There is allot of wonderful supplies in my studio but in the end I really don't use that many in most paintings.
Over the years, it has been refined down to some great staples. It is mostly Golden liquid paints, they are great colours and the right consistency for the detail I paint. For the week they are poured into small capped containers. Generally it is a fairly limited palette....6 colours plus about 4 extra.
Out of 5 favourite brushes, the majority of every painting is created with a number 6 round. It just feels great in my hand and has a point fine enough for detail yet holds enough paint for faster work also.
I like to have lots of natural bits and pieces around to enjoy and use for inspiration....pinecones and branches etc. A good solid easel and it is a happy day.

An inspiring Stump
I have been lucky enough to find inspiration in all sorts of natural bits and pieces of the woods. I am often found painting with a brush in one hand and a branch in the other for reference. Or perhaps it is a rock, some bark, grasses or moss or whatever thing of natural beauty that I am painting into my artwork. Nothing is better for reference than the real thing.
Here is an example of a wonderful hollow stump I found down back of our property and it now stands in a place of honor in the corner of my studio. It has been featured in several different paintings. Here it is and here are a few of the paintings it is in.

Creativity
It is so great to see the creativity that is in all the people around us. Everyone has a fountain of creativity and is using it in different ways. Some are titled artists like myself and creativity is expected and credited to you. But (of course) absolutely everyone is creative.
It is a wonderful human trait and we all have it. I really enjoy watching creativity and how people use theirs. It is a study of mine. Mechanics that can sleuth out the trouble with your car when there is no logic to why the car is acting out. The cooks that can take basic ingredients and make food that is so much more than the sum of the parts. Accountants that can somehow make the numbers all make sense. Teachers that can make an interesting mystery that invites you to learn. Leaders who are people persons that lead a group with grace and enthusiasm. Everyone who can see a better way to step up, over and around the difficulties in their path to keep growing.
There is a sparkle to creativity that is easy to recognize once you start looking for it in all the lives around you. Watch for it and it is a delight to see. Start observing and appreciating everyone using their creativity and strengths to expand their lives. Always inspires me to do the same.

How Artists See
Artists have a slightly different way of looking at the world...or perhaps we see the world in just the same way but take note of slightly different things. The other day at the winter carnival parade I stood with my family on the cold winter street and clapped as the floats went by.
I enjoyed looking at the costumes, the colours, the artwork and listening to the songs. The men in my family admired the trucks, quads, the chrome rimmed tires and the more complex constructions of floats.
But as one SUV stopped in front of me I was delighted to see that nature had added delicate icicles all along the bottom edge of the vehicle. As I happily commented on this....there was startled but kindly laughter from my family. When we returned to the parking lot, they pointed out tongue in cheek, all of other beautiful icy decorations on the bottoms of the vehicles. I had to laugh.
It did seem silly to be in the midst of all that parade display to be caught by the beauty of icicles. But I realized that it was my slightly different look at the world that gave me something to say in my artwork. Something to share that perhaps someone else hasn't noticed yet.
Or perhaps I am just a bit odd....there is a very slight possibility of that too.........but NO I don't think it is that at all!

Commissions
Commissions are a wonderful way to join together two hearts and create one piece of art that tells not only the artist's thoughts but also that of the collector. Where one person tells the story and the other embroideries it. An idea that grows shifts and morphs to something wonderful and collaborative between two to become a delightful keepsake.
It is a process that is more difficult than the normal artwork that I create but more rewarding as it speaks to the experiences that are shared and understandings that are broadened. It is a challenge and an honour to try to bring into reality....to flesh out a thought, an idea, to give it the presence it deserves. Thank you!

Be Safe when Creating Art
Just a quick reminder to myself and all of you to be safe with your art supplies....not all of what we work with as far as paints and solvents etc are safe to be absorbed into your body....protect yourself from exposure to dangerous materials. Use gloves where necessary and a respirator whenever you are using anything that is being propelled out into the air that you are breathing.
It is so easy to become a bit too casual about threats that you can not really see....or to believe that a little isn't a problem. This is my yearly reminder and yours as well. I have just replaced my respirator filters and reminded myself about gloves and glasses for situations that apply. Protect yourself...your body will thank you with great health! Happy Painting

Another art form
Today I am going to share a different art form that I enjoy doing. I can't paint all the time and on the long winter evenings I love to create jewelry with my two favourite stones, Agate and Labradorite. Here are what some of them look like.

Inspiration spots
Places inspire Paintings. I am just working on a painting of Adams River Gorge.....The Adams River is a famous local river. It is famous as the birthplace of a huge number of Sockeye Salmon. Every 4 years there is a huge return of spawning salmon that flood back home and up the river to lay their eggs. Every year we go to see the salmon. On the low years sometimes there is just a few and we walk the trails by ourselves. On the big return year the trails are packed with people from all over the world looking at this natural wonder.
But this is a favourite river of mine all year around....we go to visit it in the spring, to see the wild runoff in the gorge and in the summer to hike the forested trails and in the fall to check on the fish and in the winter to hear the cold murmur of the water running down over the rocks to the lake.
I have painted many paintings of my experiences at Adams River. There has been paintings of rocks, leaves and water, fishing rods laying on the rocks, gulls soaring over head, eagles and fish and now just working on a painting of the water rushing through the gorge. When it is complete it will be posted on www.valerierogers.com

Happy New Year
It is always an interesting time when the end of the year rolls around.
I greet it with mixed feelings. Have I done as well as I hoped in the past year?...what are my goals for the new year???
Then as I reflect.... there is always such wonderful happenings in the past year that I worry that the new year will have to really work to do as well.
Then I realize that it is all about perception, mindfulness and a decision that this will be the best year ever. It is my job to create it as such.
So I am really looking forward to this awesome upcoming year full of family, joy, health, wealth and happiness. Have a great one everyone! See you in 2017! We will have a wonderful time.

Framing - so important
Framing is such an important part of artwork. It can make or break not only the appearance but also the longevity of the artwork. It can be so hard to do it right and even when you do, it might not suit the home or business the artwork is going to be displayed in. Yet when it is done right it makes artwork simply wonderful.
The first part sounds easy, just pick a frame that suits the artwork. Now you must consider colour, texture, width, surface shine, durability, price and like-ablity (will most people like it.) That last one is for me as an artist as I am choosing in the hopes that my collectors will like it. Sometimes is goes so easily...the frame just works....other time you need to try all the samples twice to come to your decision.
Now I have to thank my framers for being incredible understanding and helping me out so much with advice, suggestions and support. Moulding & More in Westbank are the greatest....always ready to help me figure out what I should do. Big Thank you out to them.

Around the World with Art
Imago Mundi Art is a fantastic idea where artists around the world are selected to represent themselves and their part of the world with a small 4 inch painting. I was pleased to be part of this and to have my painting travel to Venice to hang with art from ....well ....everywhere.
This art is like a vibrant belt of creativity that is wrapping around and around the world...showing snippets of what is important to each of us. Of course mine had to be about animals...celebrating those little tree creatures that always make me smile.
Huge thanks to the organizers of this and to Laura Watmough from Hidden Talent Art School for introducing me to it.

Painting rocks and water
In response to some questions about painting rocks and water thought I would post this painting progression. I totally love to paint rocks and water, to try an represent two such different and beautiful elements together is a challenge; the liquid transparency of water and the solid strength of stone.
This painting was one of those that just seemed to enjoy being created. Each step kind of flowed into the next just like the river it represented.
Here are the photo representations of the steps that it went through. Starting at a pale grey coloured gesso (tinted with blue & brown to make soft grey) and blocking in the shapes of river, rocks and background. After basic shapes, I usually block in the darks an lights. Then proceeding to develop each of these area, starting from the top of the painting and working down. http://www.valerierogers.com/
